Your House Needs This Cabinet from the BHG Collection—and Here's Why

I’m a home editor and organizing fanatic. I flipped over this handsome caned storage cabinet from the BHG Walmart collection. Even better—it's on sale right now.

Ever since I first saw BHG’s Springwood Collection at Walmart, I’ve had my eye on this cabinet. I knew it would give a nice amount of storage space, plus it looks great. (Can you ever have enough closed-door storage? I say absolutely not.)

Everything about its styling rings my aesthetic bells: the clean, simple lines; the warm, midtone wood finish; the caned doors. (I have lots of caned chairs at my house and I’m a big fan of the way caning adds an almost tropical feeling to a room.) I also like that the cabinet is on legs—nicely tapered, midcentury modern legs. That makes it look light on its feet rather than heavy and monolithic, which will help it work in lots of different spaces.

Versatile Storage

Right away, I identified multiple spots in my home where this cabinet would fit right in. In the bathroom to hold towels and toiletries was one option. In the family room to hold games, books, and magazines was another. It would look great in my home office, too. I like how the shelf gives it a mix of closed-door and open storage/display space. Ultimately I decided to land the cabinet in my dining room where it pops against my navy blue walls.

Now, I cannot tell a lie. I did not assemble the cabinet myself. (I am not the handiest person you'll ever meet.) I did, however, unload it from its box (it was crazy heavy but very efficiently packed with zero plastic or styrofoam) and organized the parts and hardware. Then I called in my assembly crew (my husband and daughter) to put it together, which they did over the course of about an hour one Sunday afternoon. They used a power drill to sink the screws, but a person could use just a the Allen wrench that is provided, a regular screw driver, and elbow grease. My crew says the cabinet was easy and straightforward to build. I can attest that it feels sturdy and solid.

Thoughtful Design Details

Details like rounded corners and elegantly tapered handles make this cabinet look and feel like a more expensive piece. The door design is especially nice. Each door has two panels of caning inset into the frame, rather than just one long piece run behind the horizontal bar at the center. That gives the doors a nice level of finish even when open.

I was also impressed by how effortless it was to add the adjustable shelves. The back corners are notched so it’s easy to get them up and over the pegs and settled where they’re supposed to be. Another thing I like is the height of this cabinet. At about 5 feet, it’s tall enough to offer plenty of storage space but short enough that you can use the top as a display space for a couple large-scale accessories that help the piece blend in with the decor of the room.

Easy Styling Ideas

Once we got the cabinet in place in the corner of my dining room, I lined the back panel with wallpaper, (I choose Feather Flock Peel And Stick Wallpaper By Genevieve Gorder). I thought it would coordinate nicely with the blue walls (the color is Benjamin Moore Hale Navy HC-154). Plus I get a little thrill out of opening a cabinet door to see a space that’s both orderly and looks pretty.

I had a blast loading up the cabinet with my tablecloths, pitchers, platters, candles, candleholders, etc. The shelves are generous and sturdy; even my biggest platters fit on the bottom shelf. Plus they're adjustable, so if I want to rearrange the layout, or store taller things someday, I have that option.

Organizing Tip: Put serving pieces that you don't use very often, like a trifle bowl or a cake pedestal, to work as organizers. I store glasses on top of my cake pedestal and tuck small bowls under it to max out the storage space. I keep extra packs of paper napkins in my trifle bowl.

It’s going to be so nice to have everything I need to set a pretty table stored in one spot just a couple feet from said table. I just might have to throw a dinner party to try it out.

Shop the Look

Honestly, I’m a fan of the whole BHG Walmart Springwood Caning collection. Most pieces come in versatile warm brown or matte black. Here are a few standouts.

I love a large, low coffee table in a family room, especially a round one. It draws together the seating in a room and somehow makes a space feel cozier. I like how the caned panels make a style statement and partially hide whatever you're storing on the bottom shelf.

Don't let the name fool you. This piece is far more versatile than just holding a TV (though it does that well). I'd use it as a low, modern sideboard in the dining room, or as a credenza behind a desk in the home office. Or if your entryway is big enough, it would make a spacious drop zone for keys and mail, especially with a mirror hung over it. You could store hats, mittens, and whatever else you need when walking out the door behind those caned panels.

These handsome seats are a convincing lookalike for much more expensive chairs I've seen. The cushioned seat and the armrests make them comfortable for extended sitting, and the contrast of the black frame with the caned back and sides is so chic.
