“Generally, the cost to replace a garage door is somewhere between $725 and $2,100,” says Craig Focht, the co-founder and CEO of All Pro Door Repair. On the higher end, replacing more than one door could reach up to $4,500. “This wide price range is because garage doors are made from a variety of materials and come in different styles."

The price varies on factors such as the garage’s size, the desired materials, and whether you install the door yourself or hire a pro. Doing the replacement yourself can be tricky, and Focht doesn’t recommend it unless you have experience. DIY installation could cost around $500.

On the high end, the average cost of replacing a garage door falls between $2,500 to $3,500, says Jon Russell, director of systems at Precision Garage Door Service. “The choice between a manual and automatic door also plays a significant role, with automatic systems typically adding an average cost of $800 for the operator,” says Russell. He advises going into a garage door replacement with an idea of what you want for a more accurate estimate of how much it will cost.

Factors That Affect the Cost of a Garage Door Replacement

Various factors affect the replacement cost. These include materials, insulation, door design, technology, the number of doors replaced, and labor costs.

1. Materials

Focht says the price of materials depends on the type of door you select. “For instance, a simple steel door will be cheaper than one made of wood,” he says. Design options like adding windows can also affect the cost. Focht notes the cost could be $200 to $400 for a single-car door or $400-$700 for a double door. According to Focht, adding wood grain paint could cost anywhere from $150 to $450, and composite trim could cost $400 to $700.

2. Extra Features

“If you want extra features like insulation or a security system for your garage doors, you’ll need to pay more,” he says. Improving the insulation could cost between $250 and $500. However, garage door sizes are standard, so costs are similar for doors of the same size, Focht says. Replacing two doors or a double-car garage door is pricier than replacing a single-car garage door.

3. Automatic Garage Door Opener

Focht also notes that an automatic garage door, while more expensive, isn’t that much more compared to the door cost. “If you’re already spending money on a new garage door, you can probably also afford to get a new garage door opener to go with it,” he says.

The kind of door opener can also affect the overall price, says Russell, whether it’s a chain, screw, belt, or wall mount. “Technological features, like smart-home connectivity, can add to the expenses,” Russell says.

Installation fees vary but are usually part of the process, Russell says. Homeowners have to anticipate these extra costs in their replacement budget.

Other needed repairs to the garage before installing the door could also drive prices up. Leveling out the driveway concrete or garage flooring might come up. “If the existing wood around the garage door opening requires replacement, homeowners may need to budget around $1,500 for this,” says Russell.

Maintenance Plans

Homeowners can protect their newly replaced garage door with ongoing maintenance plans. Such plans can charge per visit or on a monthly basis. Although these plans are optional, homeowners may find them valuable because they can keep their garage doors in good working order for longer. Otherwise, maintenance time and responsibility falls to the homeowner, who may or may not be up to the task.
